A Slower Week Among the Small Islands

This 7 day sailing itinerary starting from Lefkas, Greece skips the busiest harbours in favour of places most visitors never see. Short legs leave time for nice swimming stops: a crystal clear beach on Kalamos, the windmills of tiny Kastos, uninhabited Atokos, and Ithaca’s sheltered harbour of Vathy.

Most days are under three hours of sailing, which makes it a good fit for families, first-time charterers, and anyone who would rather swim than race.

Your Weekly Itinerary on the Water

Distances are approximate. Your skipper adjusts each day to the forecast, so treat this as the ideal plan rather than a fixed schedule.

  1. Embarkation at Vliho Bay, Lefkas
    Vliho Base, Lefkas No sailing

    Day 1: Embarkation at Vliho Bay, Lefkas

    Check in at our sail2day private pontoon from 18:00 on Saturday, settle into your cabins, and let the base team walk you through the yacht. The small islands on this itinerary have few shops, so this is the evening to make sure the galley is well stocked.

    Skipper’s tip: Order provisions at least 48 hours ahead so they are waiting on board when you arrive.

  2. Across to Kalamos
    Vliho, Lefkas → Kalamos Port ~17 NM

    Day 2: Across to Kalamos

    Sail east past Meganisi. Your first swimming stop to Fanari Beach in the island of Meganisi. Heading to Kalamos, a mountain island covered in pine forest. Don’t miss the stop to Asprogiali Beach, on the North East part of the island. Spend the night in Kalamos harbour town. Sleepy and picture-perfect, with stone houses along the promenade and family tavernas a few steps from the quay.

    Skipper’s tip: Harbourmaster George is famous for meeting incoming yachts and helping with lines. Give him a wave on your approach.

  3. Port Leone and the windmills of Kastos
    Kalamos → Port Leone → Kastos ~10 NM

    Day 3: Port Leone and the windmills of Kastos

    A short morning hop around Kalamos to Port Leone, a village abandoned after the 1953 earthquake where only the stone church still stands. Swim, explore the ruins, then cross to tiny, car-free Kastos for a sunset drink in a converted windmill.

    Skipper’s tip: Space on the Kastos quay is limited. Arrive by early afternoon, or anchor in the bay with long lines to shore.

  4. Atokos, then into Vathy
    Kastos → Atokos → Vathy (Ithaca) ~18 NM

    Day 4: Atokos, then into Vathy

    Stop for lunch at Atokos, an uninhabited island with steep cliffs dropping into clear water, then sail on to Ithaca. Entering Vathy is one of the great moments of the Ionian: a winding natural channel that suddenly opens into a huge, sheltered bay.

    Skipper’s tip: Atokos has no facilities at all. Bring everything you need for lunch, and the dinghy for getting ashore.

  5. Gidaki Beach and Agia Efimia
    Vathy → Gidaki Beach → Agia Efimia (Kefalonia) ~16 NM

    Day 5: Gidaki Beach and Agia Efimia

    Visiting Gidaki Beach, after departing Vathy port of Ithaca. Gidaki Beach is often voted Ithaca’s best beach, and because it is hard to reach on foot it stays unspoiled. Anchor off, swim ashore, and spend the morning in water so clear it looks like a pool. Head to Kefalonia east side in the fishing village harbour of Agia Efimia.

    Skipper’s tip: The afternoon Maestro can build on the crossing to Kefalonia. Leave Gidaki by midday and make sure your anchor is well set before heading ashore for dinner.

  6. Afales Beach and on to Vasiliki
    Agia Efimia → Vasiliki (Lefkas) ~20 NM

    Day 6: Afales Beach and on to Vasiliki

    Leave the fishing village of Agia Efimia and sail north past the tip of Ithaca for a swimming stop at Afales Beach, a quiet bay with clear turquoise water. After a long swim, continue across to the south of Lefkas and the wide bay of Vasiliki, where you spend the evening ashore at one of the waterfront tavernas.

    Skipper’s tip: Vasiliki is famous for its strong afternoon wind. Aim to arrive by early afternoon and take your time with the mooring.

  7. Papanikolis Caves, Desimi and home
    Vasiliki → Vliho, Lefkas ~20 NM

    Day 7: Papanikolis Caves, Desimi and home

    Leave Vasiliki in the morning and sail towards Meganisi for a stop at the Papanikolis Caves, the huge sea caves on the island’s coast. Then enjoy a last swimming stop at Desimi Beach before sailing back into the calm waters of Vliho Bay and the sail2day pontoon.

    Skipper’s tip: Leave in the morning to make the most of the lighter winds, and keep the caves for a calm moment when the swell is low.

Kastos is tiny and Atokos is uninhabited, so shops are scarce. Have provisions delivered to the yacht before departure and top up water whenever you can.
