Sail Trim Masterclass

Trim Like You Mean It

MORE SPEED, LESS HEEL, SAME WIND

A full day on the water dedicated to one thing: getting more out of your sails. Shape, twist, telltales, and the small adjustments that separate a good sail from a fast one.

The Challenge

"Set It and Forget It"

Most sailors trim once at the start of a passage and never touch the sheets again. The wind shifts, the boat heels a little more, boat speed drops β€” and nobody notices, because the sails still look "full." You've got a license to sail, but nobody ever taught you to actually read a sail. The result is a boat that's slower, harder to steer, and less fun than it should be.

The Solution

"Trim Is a Conversation, Not a Setting"

This clinic puts you on the helm and the sheets, hour after hour, in real changing conditions. You'll learn to read telltales, feel weather helm build before it slows you down, and make the small continuous adjustments that professional crews make without thinking. By the end of the day, trimming stops being guesswork and starts being a habit.

Overview

A Full Day, All on the Sheets

This is not a sailing course β€” it's a performance clinic for skippers who already know how to sail and want to sail better. Unlike your skipper training, where trim is one topic among many, here it's the whole day.

We work upwind, downwind, and on a reach, in whatever wind the day gives us, so you leave with a feel for trimming across real conditions rather than a single textbook scenario.

Course Outline

What You Will Master

⬆️

Upwind Performance

  • βœ“ Mainsail Twist: Reading leech tension and mainsheet vs traveler trim.
  • βœ“ Genoa Cars & Leech: Positioning the car and setting sheet tension for the conditions.
  • βœ“ Rig Tension: How backstay and rig tune change headsail shape upwind.
  • βœ“ Reading Telltales: Using luff and leech telltales to trim continuously, not just once.
πŸ’¨

Downwind & Reaching

  • βœ“ Easing the Main: Vang, sheet, and preventer setup as you bear away.
  • βœ“ Wing-on-Wing: Sailing dead downwind without an accidental gybe.
  • βœ“ Reaching Trim: Adjusting sheet leads as the apparent wind moves forward.
  • βœ“ Broach Prevention: Spotting the warning signs before you round up or bury the rail.
🎯

Boat Speed & Feel

  • βœ“ Helm Balance: Trimming to reduce weather helm and rudder drag.
  • βœ“ Heel Angle: Why over-trimming for lighter sheets can cost you speed.
  • βœ“ Reading Wind Shifts: Watching the water and adjusting before the puff hits.
  • βœ“ Speed vs Pointing: Deciding when to foot for speed and when to pinch for height.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to already hold a skipper license?

You need to be comfortable on the helm, but a formal license isn't required β€” this clinic is open to anyone with basic sailing experience who wants to trim better, including crew and not just skippers.

What if there's very little wind on the day?

Light air is actually one of the best conditions to learn trim in β€” the boat responds slowly, so you have time to feel the effect of each adjustment before making the next one.

Is this only for monohulls?

The core principles apply to any sailing yacht. If you specifically want catamaran-focused trim and handling, our Catamaran Masterclass covers that in more depth.

Will I be racing, or is this cruising-focused?

The techniques come from racing, but the goal is entirely cruising: a faster, more comfortable, less heeled boat for your own charters and holidays.
